ABOUT

Stem 1 and Stem 2 at the annual SRP Breakfast

OVERVIEW

The Science Research Program, more commonly known as the STEM Research Program, is a two-year elective for science-driven sophomores and juniors to expand their knowledge beyond Biology, Chemistry, and Physics class. Students attend field trips, are introduced to speakers and their specialized science fields, and discuss current scientific advancements within class periods.

CLASS TIMELINE

As sophomores, students are encouraged to expand their scientific knowledge to the extent of their abilities. We believe that having a vast understanding of science and all of the facets that accompany the subject are important to touch on, in order to become a well-informed member of society.

As a junior, students deep-dive into their specific interests and are paired with a local mentor to work on a research topic developed at the end of their sophomore year. Students then work to complete their project by the end of the year, but are able to continue STEM in senior year (Advanced Science Research).

SPEAKERS + field trips

Speakers and lecturers regularly visit our STEM classes to discuss everything from California Grizzly Bear reintegration, to the physics of Formula 1 racing, to solar energy, to fracking, to sound waves, to AI, and hundreds more.

STEM students also attend field trips to local centers for scientific advancement such as the many labs at UCSB, Sonos, and more.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Towards the end of the prospective students' freshman year, an announcement will be made in Monday Assembly to introduce what the STEM course entails. Quickly following, a google form will be sent to all 9th graders discussing the applicants qualifications, interests, and overall passion for science. Within the next couple of weeks, both science and math teachers alike will evaluate the anonymous application, and based upon multiple factors, nine students will be accepted.
